A Maya City Comes to New Life
The city, its rulers and architecture
About this volume
The opening volume introduces Lakamha`—Palenque—through its geography, dynastic history and architectural development. It follows the city from its early formation and royal genealogy to its rise, transformation and eventual decline.
The Palace, the Temple of the Inscriptions, the Cross Group and other surviving structures are examined as evidence of political authority, ritual life and a distinctive Palenque artistic tradition. The volume establishes the historical and physical foundation for the entire series.
