CHAPTER I

Research Begins

The work grew from reading, collecting and comparing sources that were scattered across languages, countries and centuries.

What began as an interest in the history of Palenque developed into a sustained documentary project. Historical accounts were traced to their original editions, translated where necessary and placed within the sequence of expeditions and publications.

CHAPTER II

The First Journey

A 6,000-kilometre journey through Mexico in 1972 placed Palenque at the centre of his future work.

The encounter was one of many visits to the remains of ancient Mexican cultures, yet Palenque’s distinctive setting and surviving urban centre remained unlike any other. It became the one site to which the research repeatedly returned.

CHAPTER III

Decades of Documentation

The archive now brings together hundreds of older and more recent works on the history of Central America.

Becker’s approach is intentionally cumulative: every report is read as part of a developing record. Differences between witnesses, translations and later interpretations become part of the history rather than obstacles to it.

CHAPTER IV

The Fifteen Volumes

The published series transforms this long research process into a chronological reference work. It presents the individuals, routes, institutions, documents and images through which Palenque was repeatedly rediscovered.

History is found not only in stone, but in every journey, drawing and written account that allows the past to be seen again.
